Lift High the Cross of Christ!!

Saturday, September 14th – Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross The cross is not pretty. It is not jewelry nor is it decoration. It is a symbol of a form of brutal, merciless capital punishment. Yet I venerate it with my very being. In fact, today I kissed the reliquary holding a piece of the True Cross at a local parish. I may kneel before a cross or crucifix lost in prayer for hours. It seems absurd. It seems ridiculous, like a man saying prayers, lifting heart, mind, and soul to the Almighty, and moved to do so...

The First Step Toward Heaven

Luke 6:27-38 Often in Scripture we hear the disciples say, "this is a hard saying."  That was the first thing I thought while reading today's Gospel.  Do good to those who hate you?  Really?  Give to those who steal from you? Seriously?  Bless those who curse you?  Come on!  Lend money and don't expect repayment?  This is out of hand!!? Blessed Are You: A Poem

Luke 6:20-26 Blessed are you who are poor He who has but little, In gift or in desire, Surely shall inherit all, When body moves up higher. His life will have been spent, In loving not the earth, But in God alone his peace, In God alone his worth. Blessed are you who hunger The man who seeks for justice, And for his daily bread, Will find a heavenly reward, In being justly fed. The stomach and the mind, Groan to seek their fill, On earth the quest is all for nought, But eternity both fulfill. Blessed are you who...

How to get better at Prayer

Luke 6: 12-19 In today's Gospel we read that Jesus spent the night in prayer.  When was the last time you or I spent the night in prayer?  I'm doing great if I spend 10 minutes in prayer.  Maybe a few times a week I'll spend 20-30 minutes in prayer with the rosary.  Once a month, if I remember, I'll spend maybe an hour in prayer in Adoration but even much of that is time spent trying to rein in my wandering mind. How does Jesus spend the night in prayer?  I mean, what does He do during that time?...

Keep Holy the Sabbath Day

Keep Holy the Sabbath Day

Monday September 9th - St. Peter Claver Luke 6:6-11 My parents and grandparents often relay stories of the "old days." One of those stories is about the Sabbath or what we would call Sunday. In their day, Sunday was truly a time of rest and recreation. Saturday was a day of work but also a day of preparing for Sunday. If food was needed for Sunday dinner it was purchased on Saturday. If gas was needed for a Sunday drive or a trip to the park, it was purchased on Saturday. In those days Sunday was a day of peace....
