My Beloved Son

My Beloved Son

The Baptism of Our Lord Luke 3:13-17 I have always been confused by the arrangement of the liturgical feasts after Christmas. Not that they're in the wrong order but in the fact that we jump from the infancy to adulthood in a matter of days. Couple that with the ingrained idea of Baptism usually being administered to infants and you can see how I can easily be confused. Today the Church celebrates the Baptism of Jesus. It celebrates this public revelation that this Jesus of Nazareth is truly the Son of God. In fact, He is God's "beloved Son." For...

Withdraw to the Wilderness

Withdraw to the Wilderness

Luke 5:12-16 Some may read today's Gospel and say that Jesus is acting selfishly. He has the power to "heal their infirmities." He has a gift that makes people want to listen to His words. "But he withdrew to the wilderness and prayed." Jesus is here giving us a lesson by example. He is showing us that no matter how pressing issues in our life may be, we must take time to pray. We must withdraw to our own wilderness, a room in the back of the house, a chapel, a walk down the street, a park, or any other...

Unanswered Prayers

Unanswered Prayers

Whenever I take the time to look back on my life I am amazed at the goodness of God. Especially so in light of my wandering ways. When I look back at the things I asked for and what was given to me instead I am filled with praise and thanksgiving. Like the country song says, "some of God's greatest gifts are unanswered prayers." Scripture tells us that God's ways are not our ways and sometimes this just plain stinks! Yet, God is a loving Father who knows what is best for us. He has a plan for us. And...

Day 17 of the 90 Day Adventure through the Bible

Read Exodus chapters 17-20 It's Day 17 of our 90 Day Adventure through the Bible and Egypt is now in the rear-view mirror.  We've come a long way in these 17 days.  We've followed the story from Adam and Eve through Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.  Generations upon generations are behind us now as we follow the family of God toward the promised land. Even though Egypt is in the rear-view mirror, many keep looking back, longing for life in Egypt.  It makes you wonder how bad things were in the wilderness to make the people long to be...

A Mother Who Keeps Her Promises

A Mother Who Keeps Her Promises

Our Lady of Guadalupe Luke 1:26-38 or 39-47 Over the past couple weeks I have witnessed the Rite of the Catechumenate at two different parishes. Those seeking admission to the Catechumenate are asked two primary questions. First, they are asked, "What do you ask of God's Church?" To which they reply, "faith." Second, they are asked, "What does faith offer you?" And they reply simply, "eternal life." Their responses are always firm and projected for all to hear. I admire their hunger and desire for faith and for eternal life. Those of us who have been "in the Faith" for...
